Napa Valley information–A great resource

Anyone traveling to Napa Valley to visit wineries inevitably begins to wonder: what are all these different parts of Napa Valley? Wine fans will tell you that the different parts (known as American Viticultural Areas) are supposed to produce wines with certain characteristics not found in other parts of Napa Valley. Each AVA has different soil, weather, and more.

Over at Snooth, one of the community gurus has written up an excellent overview of the Napa Valley AVAs. Whether you’re traveling there or not, you should definitely review it. You will see these AVAs on many wine labels, and having this information will help you better understand what’s in the bottle.

What effect does oak have on wine?

Winemakers have been aging wine in oak barrels as long as anyone can remember. California Chardonnays are often described as “oaky.” So what is it with oak and wine, and how does oak affect a wine’s characteristics?

There are countless facts that answer these questions. Our friends over at Snooth, however, have condensed these facts down into an article for their Wine 101 series: There’s Oak and then there’s Oak. What I particularly like about this article is that it gives you excellent examples of how oak has created a signature style for a winery such as Silver Oak.
