Free Thanksgiving wine guide for email subscribers

by William Wilson on November 16, 2008

With Thanksgiving just around the corner here in the U.S., we wine enthusiasts begin to think about wines to serve. Since I love giving information away for free (yes, I know I’m somewhat insane), I decided to put together a quick and easy guide to Thanksgiving wines.

To get it, you need to subscribe using your email address in that box just to the right (the “powered by FeedBlitz” one). The guide is only available to email subscribers; RSS subscribers won’t get it unless they sign up with their email address. Email subscribers will also have access to material that is otherwise unavailable, such as the 2008 Christmas wine guide that’s in the works.

Don’t worry–the only email you will EVER get after you subscribe will come from me. I do not share my email list with anyone. Never. I hate spam in my mailbox as much as you do.

Be sure to hurry, though–once Thanksgiving arrives, the guide is gone!

Pinot Days in Chicago on Saturday 11/15/2008

by William Wilson on November 12, 2008

Don’t forget, Pinot Days comes to Chicago’s Navy Pier this weekend. There are a lot of small producers on the exhibitors list, which will be a great opportunity to try some wines I haven’t had before.

This is a new event to me, so I’ll be interested to see how they put it together and deal with large crowds.

Anyone going to be there?

Excellent New Zealand wine resource

by William Wilson on October 23, 2008

Thanks to Fred Ordway of Allan Scott in New Zealand, I can share this New Zealand Wine web site with you. This resource has tons of information and helpful tools throughout, including a wine aroma wheel specifically for NZ Sauvignon Blancs [pdf file]. There’s plenty of in-depth research reports as well as a whole vineyard’s worth of links to other web sites of wineries and organizations.

Add this one to your bookmarks!

Follow me around the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival

by William Wilson on September 30, 2008

I discovered a really cool new Web 2.0 thingy today, posterous. It’s sort of like in between Twitter and full-blown blogging. You kind of need to see it in action to fully understand it.

Anyway, Catherine and I fly out on October 17 for a week at the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival. I’ve  previously raved about it being a great way to learn about wine, so I won’t do so again here.

With my own posterous web page, I can use my iPhone to take pictures, notes, etc. and email them so they will appear on my page. Posts will also automatically show up on Twitter.

Posterous may be just the trick for sharing quick wine experiences that don’t deserve a blog post but that also aren’t quite Twitter-appropriate. Stay tuned!

Good video with information on Champagne

by William Wilson on September 22, 2008

Nicely done video that emphasizes true Champagne comes only from Champagne in France. I also like the point that Champagne can be enjoyed any time–no need to wait for a special occasion. Make one up if you need to!

Wine shipping battles continue

by William Wilson on September 21, 2008

I have to admit, even though I’m an attorney and try to keep up on the issue of legally shipping wine to consumers, I get terribly confused. Here in my home state of Indiana, we lost a court battle a couple of months ago when the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit upheld a silly requirement: that there be a face-to-face transaction (so I can prove I’m of legal age) before a winery can ship to me.

An email from Bruce Gillespie reminded me that it might be helpful to all of you if I put up some resources on this topic. Please visit these sites and, where appropriate, join up.

For a great examination of the whole “we must keep minors from buying alcohol online” thing, check out an editorial from the Gary Post Tribune.

More reliable wineries to help you learn about wine

by William Wilson on September 8, 2008

A reader from Brazil emailed me to point out that he can’t find many US-based wines, so he asked if there are some options out of Chile or Argentina. The answer is definitely yes!

From Chile, I recommend Concha y Toro. This large outfit makes wines at several price points, and the quality is always consistent. The Casillero del Diablo line is a terrific bargain.

I’m also a fan of Casa Lapostolle. The prices start a bit higher ($15 to $20 US) and go up from there, but they produce some great wines.

As for Argentina, I’m drawing a huge blank right now. I know they are out there, and I’ll bang my head against my desk when I hear them, but at the moment the mind is empty.

What suggestions can you make for our South American amigos?

Any wine blogger or wine web site owner knows that people are busy. We all have limited time, so we tend to gravitate toward “the best” resources online. Whenever we share a web site that we’ve found or know about, we’re taking a huge risk: people will forget about us. So, we tend not to take that risk.

I don’t care. I’m going to take it because people have to know about Wine Library TV. The host/star/producer/soul of Wine Library TV is Gary Vaynerchuk. He has absolutely blown the wine world away by his success. He owns/manages/something a wine business out east (around New York). He does roughly 5 to 7 video podcasts per week where he talks about wine (and the NY Jets and other things).

In a word, he’s nuts.

I mean that in a good way. He’s nuts about wine. He’s nuts about the Jets (I’m not, but it doesn’t matter). Most importantly, he’s nuts about bringing the joys and miracles that are wine to everyone. He can take some getting used to at first, but once you realize how absolutely freaking passionate he is about wine, you can’t help but like the guy. There are all sorts of things about his video show that may turn you off (”The Thunder Show,” “sniffy-sniff,” etc.) but they all arise out of his amazing passion for wine. He can’t help himself. He’s genuine, the real deal.

I must admit, I don’t watch every episode. Like all of you out there, I’m a busy person with stuff to do. The time available to do things online is limited.

I’m ashamed. I should watch every episode. Vaynerchuk, while not perfect, is a voice worth listening to. (And he absolutely absolutely absolutely says that you have to rely on your own palate–forget what he or me or anyone else says about a wine. If you like it, that’s all that counts.) But every time I watch his show, I can’t help but smile and be a little bit jealous of his passion and the unabashed way in which he shares it. Some feel my podcast was too, um, dull–that’s the inhibitions at work. When I get worked up about a wine, I could go toe to toe with Gary V and not even blink. But doing it publicly is a bit tougher. I absolutely love the way Gary does what he does. I don’t share his passion for the Jets (professional football–gimme a break), but he is who he is, he’s not embarrassed by it, and he loves what he does with wine.

By telling you about his video podcast and stuff, I’m risking losing some of you to his show. I hope you’ll be able to subscribe to both of our web sites, interact with both of us, recognize that we have slightly different roles to play. But I could not sit here and claim to be a wine educator if I wasn’t willing to share one of the great resources out there and turn you on to it. If I didn’t recognize GaryVee for who he is and the effect he’s had on the world of wine, I’d have no integrity at all.

So, please–check out Wine Library TV. But don’t forget this humble little resource. Enjoy the approach that both web sites take. And hey, you get twice as much for your dollar (his show is as free as this blog/old podcast is)!

A free Riesling resource

by William Wilson on August 24, 2008

Jancis Robinson points us to a great deal: a free e-book that will educate you about Riesling. Now if we can just find someone to send all of us some free Riesling! ;-)
