Wine Blogging Wednesday: Naked Chardonnay

by William Wilson on July 29, 2007

wbwlogo.jpgAugust is the third anniversary of the WBW phenomenon, and Lenn Devours is asking wine bloggers to find an unoaked Chardonnay for this coming month.

If you don’t like the big, oaky, pull-splinters-from-your-tongue Chards that are easy to find, you really might enjoy an unoaked Chard.

So, get your naked white wine picked out and blog about it on August 8.

Wine Blogging Wednesday: Washington State Cabs

by William Wilson on June 6, 2007

wbwlogo.jpgI’m a bit late on the announcement, but next Wednesday is Wine Blogging Wednesday, hosted by Catie’s blog dedicated to Walla Walla wines. I have to say, I think this is the perfect time for this theme (for me, anyway). The last several WBWs I’ve participated in have been great in that they’ve challenged me to go off the beaten path a bit and learn some new things.

This theme, though, is sort of like a homecoming. I have a good chunk of Washington Cabs in my cellar, some going back a few years, and this will be a great opportunity to open them up and see how they are doing. In a nutshell, I love Washington Cabs. There’s something about them (reasonable prices being one) that sit well with my palate. In a way, they are my wine version of comfort food.

So, Catie, thanks for picking a great theme!

We have a winner!

by William Wilson on June 6, 2007

The magic random number generator selected one number out of the 170 elligible entries, and I’ve sent an email off to the lucky person.

So, does this type of thing interest the readers and listeners? Should we do other contests in the future? Let me know what you think by leaving a comment–and thanks!

WFN 72 and 73 are up–Viticulture parts 2 and 3

by William Wilson on May 13, 2007

It’s been a marathon day here at WFN, but we managed to get the second and third (which is the final!) parts of our viticulture series done. Not too much work in itself, but when you’re cleaning house, taking Grandma out for Mother’s Day, and so on, it’s not always easy to get the podcasts done.

Anyway, as usual, download the files directly (Episode 72, Episode 73), use the Podtrac player, or the iTunes Store.

We’re geeking out in this episode–to an extreme level. In this show, we explore why viticulture, the science of growing grapes, is more difficult than one might think. Since the material is a little dry, we’re breaking the topic up into three episodes. But don’t let the “dryness” deter  you from listening! If you love wine, you know that good wine starts in the vineyard. You’ll have a new appreciation for the folks who grow the grapes that go into your wine.

You can download the file directly to your computer, listen with the Podtrac player in the upper right corner, or use the iTunes Store.

Stay tuned for parts two and three!

Wine For Newbies on Winecast

by William Wilson on April 23, 2007

Last week I joined Tim Elliott of Winecast for a live show on the Talkshoe sytem (network?). The show has been posted on Talkshoe, so you can give it a listen if you’d like. We discussed a great listener question: If you had to do it all over again, how would you go about learning about wine differently? We also talk about some wines we recently enjoyed, and you learn a bit more about how I got into the whole wine thing.

While I wish the audio was a bit better, I’m thrilled to share this interview with Michael Jordan, the lead sommelier and general manager of Disney’s Napa Rose at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California.

Simply put, this is my favorite restaurant on the planet. (There’s a part of me that’s trying to figure out how to sneak out to eat there next month.)

Michael Jordan was kind enough to sit down with me to share some thoughts. We recorded the podcast right in the dining room, and you can hear the kitchen staff at work behind me. For some reason, my microphone wasn’t picking up properly, but Michael’s voice comes through loud and clear. He has a lot of good information to share, and I hope you enjoy the interview.

Show Notes:

As always, you can listen using the Podtrac player in the upper right corner, the iTunes Store, or download the file directly. Let me know what you think! (And, yes, I know there are a few electronic “beeps” in the show a couple of times. I have no idea where they came from!)
