What can I do for you?

Every once in a while I like to ask readers to give me a bit of feedback. Specifically, I like to ask:

  • What do you like about Wine For Newbies (the web site)?
  • What do you like about Wine For Newbies 2.0 (the podcast and vidcast)?
  • What do you not like about the web site/podcast/vidcast?
  • What makes you spend time at the web site?
  • What could Wine For Newbies do that would make you declare WFN to be the world’s best web site? (Okay, maybe not the world’s best site, but what would make you tell all your friends, Facebook contacts, and so on?)

If you’d be kind enough to leave a comment with your thoughts about these questions, that would be outstanding!

I like the in-depth education about different wines and wine regions. I love the vidcast! It helps us understand who you are and your passion really shows through. I would like to see the vidcasts go a little more in depth, kind of like your original podcasts. I would like to see more guests and seminars. Overall, great job. I will continue to come back as long as you keep teaching us about wine.

Bill, WFN is a great idea and so far has been very informative. there are a few observations that I would make though. (And I am not a complete newby, I have had a passion (obsession?)for wine for around 25 years, but I do like to read and follow anything that I can about the subject)

Firstly currency: I regularly go back to some of your older podcasts, as a recap. Every now and then though, you will say something that is very out of date.

Vid casts: Some of your recent Vidcasts are good, but are handicapped by a slightly amateur approach. Could you get a getter webcam, and could you work out how to show off the things that you are talking about maybe.

I am not for a moment thinking that you should imitate Gary Vaynerchuk, but a bit more omph would be good.

It would be good to see things like a comparative tasting around a theme with a conversation around what is different. Eg $10, $20, $40 Cabernet. Or a French, American and Australian Shiraz. What makes them different and how does the difference manifest itself?

Finally, a it less Americo-Centric would be good for me. I do understand that you are probably focussed on a mainly American audience, but many, like me are not American!

    Regards and best wishes.

    Bill,

We often listen to your podcast and greatly appreciate your efforts. We like the simple and straight-forward lessons about wine, like the explanation of wine jargon. We would recommend to keep the content simple; afterall, it is for newbies.

    Much thanks,

    rob and amy

Thanks, Rob and Amy. I’m a pretty simple person in my approach to wine, so I would anticipate that the content will remain simple. Thanks for the kind words!

Hi, Bill. I was introduced to Wine for Newbies on iTunes. I’ve been enjoying Gary Vaynerchuk’s Wine Library TV for about two years, and I love his unique style and personality, but I also like to get wine information from other sources – everyone has an angle that will teach you something that you didn’t know.

What I like about Wine for Newbies 2.0 is your thoroughness and clarity. Also, your modest approach, which comes across in your friendly and happy voice. So, I guess I should add the ‘friendly and happy’ tone as part of the what I like about Wine for Newbies 2.0.

I’ve taken a few wine courses in the last year (with the LCBO in Toronto – if you know who/what the LCBO is), so I thought I knew something about wine by now. I also took the first level of WSET. But you know what? (a) There is always something to learn. And (b) I’m learning a lot from your clear and newbie-friendly approach. All the mish-mash in my head is falling into place. Thank you!

I haven’t yet started to focus on my subscription (RSS) to the written word portion of Wine for Newbies, but when I do I’ll let you know what I think.

    Bill,

As I’ve said before, I really enjoy the podcast and site. I am definitely a wine newbie, but your lessons have helped my understanding to progress. I know in the past you have set up a forum and community, and I see that this is no longer the case, probably due to time and money. I feel like it would make the site more a destination if there was this community approach though. Right now I’m subscribed, so I feel like I get all the information through email and podcasts, so there is no need for me to visit often. This is just something to consider.

Also, I know you’ve gone over a ton of different wine, including different varietals and regions, but I’ve run into a wall lately trying to look up information on decanting and the different benefits of different styles of decanters. Maybe an episode dedicated to wine accessories would be an idea?

Thanks again for all your hard work. I appreciate your style, as it doesn’t come across as snobby, like a lot of “wine enthusiasts.” Your friendly attitude helps to make wine an approachable subject for those of us who may be nervous about getting our feet wet.

I will probably have an episode soon about wine accessories. I’m not sure that different styles of decanters really make a big difference. The purpose of the decanter is a) to get the wine out of the bottle and better exposed to air, and b) to pour off the wine from the bottle and leave the sediment behind.

My favorite decanter is one that was sold by Wine Enthusiast a while back (and still may be). It’s a simple design with a big dome in the bottom to help aerate the wine as it’s being poured in. It was right right price, too. I’d say find a decanter that is visually attractive and fits in your budget. After that, it’s all about the wine!
