Longtime readers know that I’m a proponent of “freeing the grapes.” Indiana, among other states, has some ridiculous wine shipping restrictions that make it impossible for me to join various wine clubs. I can’t even order wines that I can’t get in my local area. Although I haven’t tried, I suspect that it’s easier for me to buy a gun over the Internet than to buy wine online.
Two articles on this topic came to my attention over the weekend. The first, from Palate Press, talks about the silliness in general. It’s a must read. The second (also a must read) comes from the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette, and shoots down the red herring argument that wine shipping restrictions is all about keeping wine out of the hands of minors.

I too am in one of “those” states (not Indiana, though I grew up there). I have recently discovered, quite by accident, that while MOST online companies won’t ship wine to my locale directly, a few will. I won’t mention what sites or what state, because I am eager to keep the grapes coming my way–finding great varietals I never would have had the chance to try otherwise, often for great prices. I’m certainly not doing anything illegal or wrong. I’m of (well more than) legal age, buying wine for personal consumption in my own home. Why on Earth shouldn’t that be legal? Particularly in a state where, up until very recently, I could have purchased a handgun at Wal-Mart … but NOT wine. Cause the latter is restricted. Geez!
At the risk of sounding like a former US president, I feel your pain.
Heck, we just had a legislative study committee oppose allowing alcohol sales on Sunday–even though we can purchase alcoholic beverages in restaurants, bars, and sports arenas on Sunday, we can’t buy a bottle of wine in Indiana on Sunday.
