Wine For Newbies 2.0, Episode 2: Wine for the terrified.

Wine can be intimidating at the start, but it doesn’t need to be. In this show I talk a bit about some of the fears that can strike the wine newbie at the start of learning about wine.

I mention a few wines to try:

  • Gewürtztraminer (white)
  • Dolcetto d’Alba (red)
  • French Pinot Noir, aka a red Burgundy (the label will probably say Bourgogne)

If you like to march to your own drummer, you can listen to the episode here.

Or, if you like to be part of the crowd, you can find the episode in the iTunes Store.

I’ll download it tonight! Gewurtztraminer is awfully hard to beat as far as price and complexity are concerned. Looking forward to your thoughts on the grape.

I completed your homework and tried a Cannonau based on a recommendation from the owner of a local wine store. I like all kinds of reds and whites, but I pretty much keep to American and South American wines because of the cheaper costs. So, I asked for a good introduction to a non-Chianti or Toscano Italian Red wine.

I really hope I just stumbled on a corked bottle…because I wasn’t impressed at all. In fact, it tasted like local TN red wine. Blech. Unfortunately, it wasn’t corked (at least it didn’t have that telltale smell). It had a very prefabricated smell to it…almost a metallic scent. The taste wasn’t much better. Very bitter with no real redeeming taste.

I won’t give up on Italian reds…but I’ll think twice before buying another bottle of Cannonau.
