Wine For Newbies Podcast: error-busting time

Wine For Newbies listeners are a good bunch of people. Even though the podcast has been officially over for quite some time, the number of downloads is still astonishing. I continue to receive emails expressing thanks for the work I put into it.

This morning I received an anonymous email that was grateful for the work, but also pointed out that the podcast episodes had a number of errors in them. The writer was concerned that these errors could lead to problems for people, especially those getting into the food and beverage service industries. I was a bit bothered by this because I know I tried to be careful in my research. I pulled information from The Wine Bible, Wikipedia, and the Society of Wine Educators. Still, mistakes happen (like saying Machu Picchu is in Chile when it’s really in Peru!!!).

Unfortunately, my anonymous fan did not give me any specifics.

The last thing I want is a bunch of inaccurate information out there. I could just yank all of the episodes from the server and shut the whole thing down, but that would be throwing the baby out with the bath water. So, I have an idea, and I need your help.

If you hear something you think is a mistake in a podcast episode, leave a comment here–identify the episode and the nature of the error. If you have a resource that supplies the correct information, it would be great if you could include that as well. If you don’t want to leave a comment, shoot me an email.

What I will then do is go through the errors, double-check the information, and when there’s enough material, record a new podcast episode (or more than one) that gives the corrections. For those who have wished for more podcast episodes, here’s your chance.

Let the error-busting begin! (No need to tell me about Machu Picchu! :-) )

In one of your podcasts you define what an acid is (when talking about the acidity of wine). It sounds like you are trying to say that an acid is something into which other chemicals are dissolved. That is incorrect. By that definition water would be an acid, and it is not – it is neutral. Chemically, an acid is a substance that when mixed with water will donate a hydrogen ion (also known as a proton). The stronger the acid, the more hydrogen ions it will release when mixed with water. Food and drink that are acidic do taste tart.
