Many wine drinkers know that their glass holds different layers of flavor, often accompanied by similar aromas. At times, though, the different flavors can be tough to distinguish because they blend together. While munching some Jelly Bellies this evening after dinner, I hit on an idea.
If you’d like to practice “separating” flavors from one another, here’s one way. Get yourself a small bag of Jelly Bellies (or other similarly flavored candies). Preferably, the jelly beans in question will be from a similar flavor palette, like tropical fruits. Take two of the jelly beans and make sure they are different. Eat them together and see if you can separate the two different flavors. At times you’ll probably notice one flavor, then another, and then perhaps the blended flavors.
By repeating this exercise, you should be able to get used to separating flavors that you taste. You could even build upon the two-bean idea by going to three and then four or more jelly beans as you improve.
Because wines are full of fruit flavors, from white fruits to dark fruits, this exercise just might help a little. Give it a try and let me know what you think by leaving a comment!

OK! Tried this for one week. Did notice some, but very little, changes in the flavors. A nice exercise, but it took away some of my wine time.
