Do wine drinkers want more wine podcasts?

A number of wine newbies (and wine people who have graduated beyond newbie status) have contacted me over the last several months to express an interest in my producing more wine podcast episodes. Lately I’ve begun to think about my desire to do more creative things during my limited spare time (as opposed to reading political articles and playing around on Facebook). There’s a part of me that thinks it could be interesting to dabble in pastels, but there are some reasons I don’t want to go down that path. (Sounds far more mysterious than it really is.)

So perhaps a new wine education podcast is in order. It would be a way for me to satisfy the creative person within, and it could be a way to bring wine information to those who want to learn about wine.

The last time around, I simply dove in without giving much thought to what potential listeners would find useful. So before I embark on this journey I would like to get some input.

Please leave a comment on what you think should be in a new wine education podcast. What’s missing from Wine For Newbies and other wine podcasts? Should I focus on doing a longer podcast on a monthly basis, with segments on different topics? Or should I focus on shorter podcasts on a weekly basis that cover a single topic? Do you want straight information, or should I include current wine news that catches my eye? How about wine trivia–is there a place for that kind of stuff?

I fully realize I will not be able to create a wine podcast that satisfies every person, but some guidance will be quite helpful.

Also, don’t forget–I need your help in fixing errors in the Wine For Newbies podcast!

My wife and I love your podcasts. We listened to them pretty much straight through on a trip to and from the in-laws. We just started drinking wine regularly and appreciate the suggestions, especially Washington State reds which we would have never thought to try on our own.

I love the idea of more podcasts. I would like to request shorter podcasts that get right to the point. That doesn’t meant they have to be boring or too sure. It is just easier for me to listen to shorter podcasts while also answering my phone at work.
I would love wine information (I am still a newbie), wine news (so I feel current) and the idea of wine trivia got me excited (I love trivia of all kinds!
Thanks for all of the great information you have already passed along and I can’t wait to see what comes next!

    Bill,
Your podcasts are great. They help me survive my commute and have been an essential part in helping me discover great wines I’ve never heard of. Please keep em coming!!

I’ve started taking a keen interest in wine about a month ago. I’ve gone through most of your podcast in a week. Thanks for everything you’ve done for the community.

Now that you’ve covered the basics, it’s time to continue the series of interviews or talks. I really enjoyed the master riesling, michael jordan, and wine blue book episodes. Not only they are imformative, but the enthusiasm brought by you and the guests are infectious.

    Bill,

Sorry for the late response. I’ve just come back from a dive trip to the Grenadines.

I think you should definitely do more podcasts. If it were me, I would make them short and at least weekly. I think a monthly podcast would make it more difficult to form a loyal following. I would also keep the educational bent (and perhaps add an occasional interview), there are enough folks out in podcast land doing tastings.

    Thanks

Yes, please! More podcasts!! I think the suggestions about keeping them educational and fairly short are sound. (I prefer podacasts that are 15 to 20 minutes, though up to 30 minutes is fine.)

I’ve been listening to your podcasts and to your friend Tim Elliot’s Winecasts, and have nearly exhausted the backlog of both (funny, haven’t yet listened to the one where he interviewed you on Wincast!). I’ve been wondering what the heck I’ll do when I run out of those…

Have you considered teaming up with Tim on podcasts?

Please keep up the good work!

    Bill:

I’ve listened to every episode as they were coming out years ago; and recently drove from New England to Disney World Florida with my wife in the car…she’s never listened to a podcast but we started from Episode 1 of WFN and listened to the entire archive.

She loved it, and in the last miles of our return trip (21 hours) I quizzed her on some of the topics you taught us (the grapes of Bordeaux, how many grapes per bottle, difference between a Sauv Blanc and Chard…and what malo-lactic fermentation is and what it does to wine).

She passed with flying colors, and we’re heading to our local wine store tomorrow to pick up some of the varietals you taught us about (I’m in search for a red sparkling wine).

Thanks so much for your podcast, and please consider returning to the microphone.

I produce my own podcast (about running) and have built up an audience that I’d like to send your way. I am also a part of a live show (titled “The Runners Round Table” where I’m setting up an interview of the guy who runs: http://finishlinewine.com I’d love to have you on that show (if you have time). Bill, I enjoy your podcasts a gret deal, but I have one observation: They are extremely Americo-centric. Please note: The world does lie (roughly) between Seattle, San Diego, Houston and New York.

Steve, thanks for your comment–I’ve contacted you back-channel.

Warren, point taken. Being in the Great Lakes region does place a lens in front of my view of the wine world. I’ll work on that.
