Yes, the new year arrived about three weeks ago, but there’s no reason you cannot make a resolution now. The year is still young, and there’s plenty of time to resolve to learn more about wine this year.
What I like to do each year is try to focus my learning on a specific aspect of wine. For example, a couple of years ago (or maybe it was last year) I chose to focus on German wines. I didn’t turn into an expert on German wines by the end of the year, but I knew a lot more on December 31 than I did on January 1.
I think this year my target will be the Rhône region in France. I really enjoy those massive reds, and the white wines from this region always seem to grab my attention. Yet, I know so little about the region and its wines. I know there’s a northern and southern Rhône but really don’t know the differences in the wines.
Now that I have my subject in mind, I can explore various resources and study up. I may never be able to remember each and every grape varietal grown in this region, but I will definitely enjoy my studies.
What will your subject of study for 2009 be? Leave a comment and let us all know!

Well, my New Year’s resolution is to drink wine (rather than beer or spirits). It’s not an ironclad rule, but I’m trying to avoid the carbs that I get with beer (which seem to congregate around my middle). I know wine isn’t exactly a diet drink, but I don’t seem to gain weight the way I do with beer.
And I can’t help myself – if I’m going to drink wine, I have to learn more about wine. Part of the reason I sought out your excellent podcasts. I’m just enough of a geek that I have to go look up information about whatever it is that catches my fancy – and with wine, there’s enough to keep me going for a lifetime….
Thanks for the great podcasts (so far, my favorite was on Sonoma), and the blog. Hope you put out more episodes soon!
The Rhône sounds like a good region to focus on this year. Seems like a great 2007 vintage is hitting the market right now.
I think I will continue to focus on the wines from around where I live, that being Austria, and I will do my best to keep my own wine blog alive and follow what other are sharing on the internet.
Walter and Janik, thanks for the great comments!
I know what you mean, Walter–beer does tend to go to the midsection. It’s not called a beer gut for nothing. As my doctor told me once, it’s like drinking straight carbs and triglycerides.
Janik, you already know there are a lot of great wines from Austria. In my neck of the woods, we typically see gruner veltliners but not much else. The search for scarce wines can be part of the fun, of course!
Who else wants to tell us their plans for the year?
