Wine and chocolate

by William Wilson on September 15, 2008

I have a confession to make: I’m a chocoholic. (I know, who isn’t?) I absolutely love the stuff, although I am pretty good at not indulging in it on a daily basis. Dark chocolate is my favorite, just the right balance of flavors. Milk chocolate will do okay, but I prefer a bit more oomph in my chocolates.

Anyway, I occasionally am asked what wines go well with chocolate. Many people try to pair chocolate with Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. Those work…well, okay. While it’s a matter of personal taste, of course, I think there’s a better option: Banfi’s Rosa Regale. The raves that students and others have given me about this wine confirm my belief.

Rosa Regale is a Brachetto d’Acqui, a fragrant and pleasant wine from Piedmont, Italy. The Rosa Regale, though, has an aroma set that I haven’t found to be as pronounced in other Brachettos: roses (hence the name).

I could sit here and write a bunch of things that would persuade you to try Rosa Regale with some dark chocolate, but I don’t want to delay you in any way. Stop what you’re doing right now and go out to get a bottle (along with some chocolate). Try it as soon as you can (sampling chocolate and Rosa Regale in your cubicle at work is probably not a good idea, unless your boss loves chocolate) and tell me I’m wrong. I don’t often dare people, but I’m going to put out the challenge: persuade me (and many others) that Rosa Regale and chocolate are not a great pairing. If you think you’re up to the task, leave a comment and let’s see. ;-)
