More reliable wineries to help you learn about wine

by William Wilson on September 8, 2008

A reader from Brazil emailed me to point out that he can’t find many US-based wines, so he asked if there are some options out of Chile or Argentina. The answer is definitely yes!

From Chile, I recommend Concha y Toro. This large outfit makes wines at several price points, and the quality is always consistent. The Casillero del Diablo line is a terrific bargain.

I’m also a fan of Casa Lapostolle. The prices start a bit higher ($15 to $20 US) and go up from there, but they produce some great wines.

As for Argentina, I’m drawing a huge blank right now. I know they are out there, and I’ll bang my head against my desk when I hear them, but at the moment the mind is empty.

What suggestions can you make for our South American amigos?

Bodega Norton is my go to winery in Argentina. Founded over 100 years ago south of the Mendoza river, they make excellent Malbec but also make other reds, whites and sparklers. They are very consistent and hit all the price points. Definately worth a look.

Of course! Bodega Norton…I’m almost ashamed that I couldn’t think of it. Thanks, Walt, for bringing that one to everyone’s attention.

How about others–anyone else have good suggestions?
