Edited on 9/13 to correct vintages.

As previously reported, the good Dr. Vino has asked us to skip the “Big Six” international varietals (Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon) and focus on indigenous grapes. We receive bonus points if we drink the wine in the location where the grapes are grown. Unfortunately, I don’t qualify for that.

My wine of choice is one I’ve mentioned before here, but it is definitely an indigenous varietal: pigato.

The wine is Laura Aschero Pigato Riviera della Liguria Italy 2005 Unfortunately, it’s darn near impossible to find here in the States (although I have a source, but the ‘05 vintage is sold out, and I’m waiting for the ‘06 vintage). A few cases manage to make it to our shores, but most of the wine ends up being sold to the Vatican. Ms. Aschero passed away a few years ago, but she took great pride in the fact that she sold her wine to the Pope.

This pigato produces intense aromas, but not overpowering. White flowers and fruits seem to dominate, with a hint of mineral as well. The color is a beautiful gold, appearing just a hair of a shade darker than its age would suggest. The combination of darker color–maybe deeper color would be a better way to describe it–and aromas suggests that the wine will be full of flavors. This wine doesn’t disappoint the taste buds. There are no surprises here, just a crisp, refreshing white wine with a long finish. While I don’t recall the cost of this particular wine, you can find other pigatos in the U.S. (and elsewhere, presumably) for anywhere from $15 to $40 per 750 ml bottle. I will leave you to your own resources to find them. ;-)

Thanks to Dr. Vino for an opportunity to rave about this wonderful wine again. I know it’s not terribly helpful that it’s not available, but since there are other producers of pigato out there, I would encourage you to give it a serious try. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
