The headline may be a bit startling, some would call it inflammatory, but it’s true. Over at Fermentation the other day, a winemaker pleaded to be treated with the same level of respect as a pornographer–just let him ship his wine to consumers like pornographers can ship their, um, products. This notion got me to thinking.
This afternoon, I went online and did a bit of digging around. Within a few minutes, I found a web site that would sell me a gun–yes, a fully functional firearm–online. All I have to do is find a local gun dealer who is willing to accept the shipment on my behalf, and then I can go pick it up. I’m not making this stuff up.
Is this ridiculous or what? In Indiana, I am not even permitted to order wine and have it shipped to my local retailer so I can pick it up there. But a gun? No problemo. Pornography? No problemo. Wine? Oh no, we could never permit that.
I’d be curious to hear from folks in other states whether they can have wine shipped to a local seller for pick up.
Maddening, simply maddening.

Hey, maybe you could get your wine shipped to Wal-Mart. You can buy guns there, too. Just don’t hum any Cheryl Crow songs when you go to pick up your bottle, or you may get thrown out of the store!
When you pick the gun up at a local dealer, you have to show proper ID, fill out a form and get authorized through the National Instant Check System. With exception to black powder firearms, all guns must be sent to a fully licensed local dealer. You neglected to state that fact. It is very common to special order a product that is not readily available locally. Welcome to America.
