Wine Blogging Wednesday 30–New World Syrah

Today is Wednesday, and it’s time for Wine Blogging Wednesday 30. Tim at Winecast has asked us to look for and blog about New World Syrah. Unlike some past events, I don’t have much to offer this time. I’ve been working on improving my health by changing my eating habits, and my review of the literature has revealed that the South Beach Diet makes the most sense for me. Those familiar with this plan know that the first two weeks include abstaining from all alcohol (no, it’s really not that bad). I wrap that up on Friday evening, so for now I have to pull out an older tasting note.

The most recent New World Syrah I had was the 2003 Coppola Shiraz. It’s dirt cheap, and, unfortunately, it tastes like it to me. Thin, boring, might be usable as cooking wine. I was somewhat pleased to see that my conclusions are shared by at least one other blogger out there.

Interestingly, you won’t find this wine featured at the Niebaum-Coppola web site, which now appears to be limited to strictly promoting the Rubicon estate wines.

This wine is a part of a series from Coppola’s wines, including an eclectic blend of red grapes known as Rosso. Catherine has used this as her stock red cooking wine for quite some time, and it’s good enough to enjoy a glass while she’s making a meal. It’s not likely to win any awards, but it’s a good basic red. The Syrah, on the other hand, can sit on the shelf.

I will hopefully be able to report more on New World Syrahs after our April trip to Santa Barbara Wine Country. Meanwhile, we’ll all anxiously await Tim’s wrap up!
