Four Sauv Blancs from last night’s class session

Geyser Peak SB California 2005: A fairly inexpensive and moderate quality SB. Light aromas with hints of grass and melon, easy drinking. Nothing wrong with it, just nothing to write home about. Give it a B-/C+.

Chateau Ste. Michelle SB Columbia Valley
2004: A few more dollars buys you a lot more wine. Moderate aromas of melon, some grapefruit, pleasant on the palate and a decent finish. B+

Matua Valley SB Marlborough 2006: Typical racy, zingy New Zealand style, although the grapefruit was not as dominant as in past vintages, allowing other characteristics to show through. Props for the screw cap enclosure. B

Baron Patrick de Ladoucette Les Deux Tours Touraine 2004: Old world style, pleasant grassy aromas, more complex, a bit heavier on the mouthfeel (probably the result of some oak aging), nice finish. B+

The class favorite was the Chateau Ste. Michelle, followed by the Matua, and the Geyser Peak and Les Deux Tours coming in tied for third.

My own ranking is the CSM, Les Deux Tours, Matua and Geyser Peak. All wines $15 or less if I recall correctly.
