We popped the cork on this bottle [PDF file] this evening while writing out Christmas cards. (Yes, we’re running a bit late.)
The color is a deep garnet with hints of purple. The aromas are complex, with some sort of mocha dominating.
The palate, however, is not quite what I’d hoped for. I’ve long believed that Washington Merlots outshine California Merlots, and I still hold to that belief. Unfortunately, this wine doesn’t live up to the standard. Most Merlots from Washington seem to be “brighter” in their flavor profile. This one strikes me as more California-ish in style. Not bad, necessarily, but not great. But, if California Merlot is your thing, this wine could be a good inexpensive alternative–it runs only $14 or so.
In terms of Merlot’s all around, I’d rate this one a B or an 85. In terms of Washington Merlots, I need to give this one a B-, or an 80. Still good wine, just not what it could be. I still like this winery a lot. Even the best wineries will have an off production. CSM is one of the most reliable producers out there, so don’t let this particular review turn you off to the winery.
